Are you interested in the architecture and design heritage of Glasgow and the West of Scotland?

 

The Architecture and Design Club dates from 1999 when the University ran several seminars during Glasgow’s year as City of Architecture and Design. Now in our 25th year, are pleased to bring you a diverse and interesting programme.

 

Why not come and join us on the ‘second’ Thursday of the month from October to April for an interesting variety of talks covering architecture old and new, all elements of design and the visual arts including sculpture, stained glass, textile design, amongst other topics. The talks will commence at 2.00pm (the exception is the AGM which will start at 1.30pm). Note: the second meeting (14th November) will take place in GH701. Subsequent room information will be provided here.

 

The membership fee for 2024 - 25 is £12.00.

October 10th POLLOK STABLES AND SAWMILL

Creating a living heritage centre for the city.

John Brown from the architects, Page\Park gives a talk on the long awaited redevelopment of the old home of the Pollok Park Clydesdale horses and the adjacent water-powered sawmill into a living heritage centre.

November 14th BIG SHINY THINGS & QUIET LITTLE HIDDEN THINGS!

Kate Robinson, award-winning artist, writer and sculptor, gives a talk on her work from large scale public art works to lesser-known small scale and private commissions.

December 12th Our CHRISTMAS GET-TOGETHER will see us returning to what proved to be a popular venue: -The Pipers’ Tryst Restaurant, 30 McPhater Street, Cowcaddens. Meet there at 2.00pm to mingle and chat over a glass of wine, mince pies, tea/coffee, and take part and hopefully enjoy our quiz. The charge is £15 (non-refundable). Book your place with your membership renewal or application.

9th January 2024 BUCHANAN GALLERIES - REDEVELOPMENT

Stuart Orr from the developers, LandsecU+1 on the proposed exciting and perhaps controversial redevelopment of the Buchanan Galleries.

13th February MULTICULTURAL DIVERSITY IN ARCHITECTURE

A visit to the Sikh Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Berkley Street where we will have a guided tour, learn a bit about the architecture and possibly partake of some “langar”.

 

13th March PROVANDS LORDSHIP & GLASGOW LIFE Scott Abercrombie of John Gilbert Architects will give a talk on the refurbishment of Provands Lordship and Scott Faichney, Glasgow Life’s strategy to protect and futureproof the city’s estate

10th April AGM followed by ART DECO IN SCOTLAND

To mark the centenary of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, Professor Bruce Peter from Glasgow School of Art will give a talk on Art Deco and his recent work with Historic Environment Scotland on the movement in Scotland.

Beatson Centre Visit

Funds raised by our Club helped purchase gifts for teenagers undergoing treatment at the Beatson Centre. A selection of toys suggested by the teenagers was presented to Jill Scott, Paediatric Radiographer by Gordon Michie, Club President on a visit with Annette Bonar and Fiona Anderson, who are both members of the A & D Committee and Beatson volunteers.  The gift box included fidget toys aimed at reducing stress and anxiety along with a couple of Lego ™️ cars, action figures and a starry night light projector.
