The Devil’s Porridge Museum tells the amazing story of HM Factory Gretna, “the greatest factory on earth” from 1915 to 1918 and the 3000 women and men who worked there, over two principal sites covering nine miles, to turn the tide of the First World War.
The museum also explores the story of the Solway Military Coast during World War Two and the ensuing Cold War and how the Eastriggs and Gretna area continued its important defence of the realm. Key themes are local people’s contribution to the war effort and evacuations to this quiet rural area.
Our November Social Outing was to this excellent Museum which we all agreed was a hidden treasure. After learning of the fascinating history behind this quiet corner of Scotland, we headed off to visit the nearby Gretna Outlet Village.
